Phanom Rung is a Khmer temple complex in
north-eastern Thailand. It is the
largest and best restored of all the Khmer
monuments in Thailand. The temple was
constructed between the 10th and 13 centuries,
with the majority of the work being done during
the reign of King Suriyavarman II (1113 to 1150
AD), which was the peak of Ankor architecture.
The temple is located on an extinct volcano and
dominates the surrounding countryside. There is
a LONG walkway leading up to the main complex,
which has numerous galleries and halls, and the
only three naga bridges left in Thailand.
Phanom Rung is a little off the beaten path. No,
it is WAY off the beaten path but it is worth
the effort . To get there from Bangkok you can
take a train or bus (about 5 hours) to Nakhon
Ratchasima, aka Khorat. From Khorat catch a
Surinbound bus and get off at Ban Ta-Ko, where
you can get a mini bus up to the complex. |
